Link Building – Important Dos and Don’t’s

Link building is one of the most important parts of search engine optimization. From the search engine point of view, link building means sharing and enhancing information access for internet users. Owing to this, search engines lay a lot of emphasis on link building activities. However, there is a catch. Search engine algorithms rank websites based on their qualitative value to a visitor. They do not value link building as an activity aimed at increasing rank. Here is where you need to be careful and ensure that your link building endeavors seem organic and natural.

If your efforts towards organic link building are genuine, you can build as many links as you want. The search engines spiders will be appreciative. However, if you indulge in artificial link building, which involves buying backlinks or using a link generator software, you might be in trouble of losing your ranking. Nevertheless, it also stands true that organic link building is slow and in this age of speed, it is not always the best solution. So, the trick is to ensure that your link building endeavors do not seem artificial.

When you build links, make sure that you do not crowd your website all at once because that is not how organic links work. When done naturally, links come sporadically, do not follow a pattern and do not come all at once. Here, there are two important things to keep in mind. Firstly, retain some of the old links on your site so that search engines rate your website as reliable enough to make other webmasters link to you for a long time. Secondly, add new links so that your site seems continuously interesting to more number of webmasters who want to link with you. Also, it is best if the number of links that you build every month increase, which indicates that your site is continuously evolving and improving.

The one aspect that you need to vehemently avoid is link spamming. It might well get your website blacklisted.  In fact, even one spam link might be dangerous. You also need to avoid black-hat link building. This is something that most webmasters indulge in, but something that requires walking on egg shells. When you indulge in black-hat link building, you post some content on the website that matches the exact color of the web page.So, the text is completely hidden from view when a visitor comes to your page.

However, even such texts are indexed by search engines because such camouflage does not work on the crawlers. Such texts are only posted for rank building and not to provide more information to visitors. Search engines do not take well to such confounding and your site will have to bear the wrath of spiders if you are caught.

So, link building is a complex activity, which can be simplified if you stick to the organic way. The latest ranking algorithm Google Panda has stricter rules for ranking and it is all based on link quality. By ensuring that your link building attempts are carefully modulated and not aimed towards merely hoodwinking search engines, you can watch your rank carefully climb up the ladder.
